The Youth Chinese Test, or YCT, is an international standardized Chinese test for young learners. Little NiHao is independent and not official YCT test prep, but our beginner storybooks are designed with the same practical problem in mind: children need useful beginner words in contexts they understand.
What a good beginner Chinese PDF should include
- Full pinyin support for parents and early readers.
- Large illustrations that make meaning obvious.
- Everyday vocabulary: family, food, weather, animals, greetings, places.
- Short, repeated sentence patterns.
- A printable format that works away from screens.
- A routine parents can repeat without preparing a full lesson.
Why storybooks work better than lists alone
Vocabulary lists are useful for review, but children remember words more easily when the words are attached to a scene. A story about helping mom can make family and action words feel practical. A story about seasons makes weather words visible.
Recommended Little NiHao starting point
For most families with a 4-5 year old beginner, start with the Sprout Bundle. It introduces family, home, seasons, friends, food, animals, places, and simple question patterns across five books.
Best first buy
Sprout Bundle: five shorter books for ages 4-5 and brand-new beginners.
Next step
Bud Bundle: longer stories for ages 5-6 or children with some exposure.
Not sure?
Start with the easier level. Repetition builds confidence faster than difficulty.
Read parent guideHow to use one book for a week
Read the same book more than once. Young children do not need a new lesson every day. They need enough repetition to recognize the same words in a familiar scene.
