Parent questions

What age is this book for?

Helping Mom is a Sprout level book for ages 4-5. Older beginners (ages 6-8) who are just starting Mandarin can also use it successfully — the short sentences and clear illustrations work at any age that is new to Mandarin.

How many characters will my child learn from this book?

Helping Mom introduces about 30-80 unique characters over 28 pages, focused on family and household vocabulary. Each character reappears several times in the story so children see them in context, not in isolation.

Does this book align to a specific language standard?

Sprout books align to YCT 1 (Youth Chinese Test level 1) vocabulary. YCT is the standardized Mandarin proficiency test for young learners developed by Chinese Testing International. Little NiHao is independent and not affiliated with CTI; the alignment means the vocabulary falls within the YCT 1 scope.

Do I need to speak Chinese to read this with my child?

No. Every page has full pinyin above each character plus an English translation. Non-Chinese-speaking parents can read the story aloud and learn alongside their child.
